Lotus Rising is a youth initiated, compassion-based service organization that embraces diversity. We create community and social change through respect, education and responsible action.

In 2006, the youth group Not Straight, Not Sure identified 2 basic needs that spurred the creation of this event.

1) Youth in area high schools were experiencing discrimination at their own school proms. Some were dismissed from the event for not wearing expected gender-specific clothing. Some were penalized for attending with a friend or date of the same gender by not being allowed to purchase discounted "couples" tickets.

2) NSNS felt strongly that they wanted to create some way to give back to the community at large and to connect with all ages in a fun way, without alcohol.

Why all ages?
We want to have this event open to all ages because we would like to give the opportunity of this prom not only to young people, but to those who have been discriminated against, as mentioned earlier and/or did not get to go to their high school prom.

Who is it for?
Queer and ally

The goal:
Our goal is to make a safe space of equality. We want it to be fun and different. We want to break the social norms and have a dance where the community is celebrated and recognized.
