Come to a Cabaret! Jeremy Lawrence stars in the West Coast premier of Lavender Songs – A Queer Weimar Berlin Cabaret, winner of New York’s 2008 Bistro Award, with recent sell out runs at Pangea in New York City. Directed by Jason Jacobs, with piano accompaniment by Ariela Bohrod, the show introduces us to “Tante Fritzi,” Lawrence’s alter-ego in this recreation of a 1930’s Berlin nightclub.

Actor/writer/playwright/lyricist for stage, film and TV, Jeremy Lawrence lived in LA before moving to New York in 2004 with his heralded reincarnation of Tennessee Williams.

Lavender Songs’ history actually began right here in LA in 1990 when Lawrence was literary manager at the Mark Taper Forum and creator of Cabaret Verboten, which starred Bebe Neuwirth and the late Roger Rees. The show later performed in New York, around the country, and Europe.

From his work on Cabaret Verboten, Jeremy went on to create English versions of over 70 Weimar period songs from literal translations by German scholars, Kathleen Komar and Alan Lareau. Lawrence sang some of these “Lavender Songs” at an ancillary event fashioned by Lareau for the exhibit “Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals (1933-1945)” at the United States Holocaust Museum. Lawrence’s English versions are now sung and recorded by cabaret artists all over the world. Listen as Ute Lemper sing’s Jeremy’s translation of the early gay liberation anthem, “Das Lila Lied”: ”Lavender Song”.

We’re thrilled to welcome Jeremy back to LA to lead us through an amazingly creative period in Berlin that lasted until Hitler’s rise to power in 1933.

Following the performance, renowned playwright and dramaturg Josh Gershick will lead a Q&A with Jeremy.
