Photo Exhibition: Kewpie

This photo exhibition looks interesting. Let's have a look and then do lunch in the area afterwards. From the blurb (on

"A collaboration between Cape Town's District Six museum, the Market Photo Workshop and the Gay and Lesbian Archives (GALA), this exuberant photography exhibition pays tribute to the extraordinary life and style of Kewpie, a well-known queer figure and hairdresser who lived in District Six and later Kensington in Cape Town in the 1960s and 1970s. While the broader story of the destruction of multi-cultural District Six under the Apartheid state's policy of Forced Removals is well known, the personal stories of the members of the community, such as Kewpie, bring the area and its radical multi-racial and cosmopolitan atmosphere to life.

Although Kewpie retained a gender fluid identity, she and her friends used female pronouns for each other. By day she was a hairdresser and by night a celebrated attendee and occasional performer at drag shows. The photos in the exhibition are taken from an archive of over 700 prints from Kewpie's life and show her socialising with friends, performing and working in the salon, and reveal an unconventional life proudly lived with colour and verve at a time when the apartheid state was becomingly ever-increasingly more conservative and repressive."
